Super excited to share the launch of a project I’ve been part of for the past year. As many of you know, I’m part of the team that re-launched the Canadian Association of Black Journalists (CABJ). Much of the work we’ve been doing so far is behind the scenes but that’s about to change... ✨ One of the CABJ’s mandates is to inspire a new generation of storytellers. In 2018, during one of my TWU courses, I had the opportunity to work with a team to develop a program aimed at encouraging Black youth to consider using their voice in media. It was a class assignment (that we did really well on!). I shared the project with the CABJ team and we began working to bring this program to life. ✨ Then, in February 2019, our Atlantic Director hosted several open houses, inviting African-Nova Scotian youth to delve into the world of media and broadcasting. Over 50 kids took part. We realized this would be the perfect place to introduce a program where kids have the opportunity to explore media, with the help of mentors who look like them. ✨ This is how J-School Noire was born. ✨ J-School Noire is designed to introduce Black youth to the field of journalism, but also give them the basic skills they’d need to be storytellers and launch their media careers. The day-long workshop covers how to tell a story (writing, producing), conducting interviews, shooting and editing and live reporting. This is about inspiring multi-platform storytellers to tell their own stories. ✨ A big thanks to our sponsors who made it possible for this pilot project to take-off 🙌🏾 Hard work *does* pay off! I’m thankful for two great teams: my TWU classmates who helped to develop this idea and my CABJ team who made it a reality. I’m excited for the CABJ, as we birth a new vision for an organization whose voice is needed in this industry.
